Celebrities get a lot of attention, sometimes even their family members become famous because of the smallest things.
However, some celebs obviously think that this level of attention isn’t enough and they want to stand out even more. Or, perhaps, they’re way too creative and just can’t live as everyone else does, so they end up giving the most extraordinary names to their kids. And we aren’t talking about some rare or old names that we have all forgotten. We’re talking about the names they came up with by themselves — the names that raise quite a few eyebrows. The names none of us would ever think about giving to our kids.
Some of them are hilarious, while others have a deep meaning. Some are inexplicable, and others are, well, quite obvious. But all of them are really, really weird…
From Kal-El to Kyd, from Destry to Elsie Otter, from Apollo Bowie Flynn to Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha, let’s talk about some of the most unusual names celebrities have given to their children and try to understand the reasons behind choosing them!
25. KAL-EL (NICOLAS CAGE)
Nicolas Cage and Alice Kim welcomed a son into their family in 2005 and named him Kal-El. Some people might think that this name is utterly weird and probably Cage came up with it by himself, but the fans of DC comics know that it’s a tribute to one of the most famous superheroes in the world.
In fact, Kal-El is Superman’s birth name given him on the planet Krypton.
Let’s not forget that Cage’s real surname is Coppola, since he’s the nephew of Francis Ford Coppola (he took the surname Cage from another comic book character, Luke Cage). So his son’s full name is Kal-El Coppola Cage.
24. MOON UNIT (FRANK ZAPPA)
Frank Zappa is the celebrity who managed to choose some of the most extraordinary names for his kids waaay before it became mainstream. The names of the musician’s kids are Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet, and Diva Muffin
We don’t know what Zappa was thinking about when giving these names to his children and we aren’t sure that the kids actually liked being called in such a unique fashion. But, as far as we know, none of them decided to change their names in adulthood, so they must be okay with them.
23. APOLLO BOWIE FLYNN & ZUMA NESTA ROCK (GWEN STEFANI AND GAVIN ROSSDALE)
Some people may think that Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale named their son Apollo Bowie Flynn to pay tribute to the musician David Bowie. However, it’s just a coincidence. First of all, the little Bowie was born in 2014, 2 years before the elder Bowie passed on. And secondly, Rossdale said that the motivation behind this unusual name was the fact that his and Stefani’s mothers had maiden names Bowie and Flynn.
What about Apollo? No idea!
But wait a second and learn the name of another son of this eccentric couple. It’s Zuma Nesta Rock. Whoa…
22. BRONX MOWGLI & JAGGER SNOW (ASHLEE SIMPSON)
When Ashlee Simpson gave birth to Pete Wentz’s child, the couple called him Bronx Mowgli, thus making their fans (and, pretty much, everyone else) ask a question why they did it. Wentz answered that the part Mowgli came from The Jungle Book, which we could certainly guess. “The Jungle Book was something that me and Ashlee bonded over. It’s a cool name,” he said. But he didn’t specify the Bronx part.
But it wasn’t the end of Ashlee’s fascination with unusual names. Her second child, a daughter born with her current partner, Evan Ross, has a name Jagger Snow.
21. DESTRY (STEVEN SPIELBERG)
Steven Spielberg has seven children and his youngest daughter (born in 1996) has the most unique name of all. It’s Destry.
If you’d like to know why the famous director gave this name to his daughter and what it means, you probably won’t. It seems to be something between ‘destiny’, ‘vestry’ and we don’t know what, while some of the fans say that it might have something to do with GI Joe‘s character Destro. But who knows what’s going on in the mind of one of the greatest cinematographers of our time?
20. KYD MILLER (DAVID DUCHOVNY AND TEA LEONI)
It didn’t take a lot of effort from David Duchovny and Tea Leoni to name their baby boy. They assumed that they were going to call him kid anyway, so they just gave him the name Kyd.
There’s some kind of irony to this name. On the one hand, it’s pretty trivial, but on the other hand – who else had an idea to name their kid, well, Kyd? So it’s actually a unique name. But we can’t be sure that Kyd likes it as much as his parents do. After all, he prefers being called by his middle name Miller, instead of Kyd.
19. ELSIE OTTER (ZOOEY DESCHANEL)
Zooey Deschanel‘s first child, a daughter born in 2015, also has a very unique name. It’s Elsie Otter. Sure, it’s a strange one, but if you say it a few times really fast, it gets even stranger, because you can distinctly hear the wordplay on “sea otter”.
Now, is a sea otter the favorite animal of Zooey and her partner Jacob Pechenik? The actress did confirm that a sea otter was an inspiration, when they were choosing the name for the baby girl, but was it really a good idea to choose such an offbeat name?
18. ROCKET ZOT (SAM WORTHINGTON)
Sam Worthington and his significant other Lara Bingle Worthington welcomed a baby boy into their family in 2015 and they chose a very unusual name for him. They called him Rocket Zot, because they liked the sound of this name and thought it was fun. Huh, did they think about whether their son would like it enough to live with it for his whole life?
Interestingly, Zot was the nickname of Lara’s late father, while Rocket was just a fun name the couple chose at random.
17. APPLE (GWYNETH PALTROW)
What’s an apple for you? Is it your favorite snack? Does it remind you of a forbidden fruit? Or do you think that it’s something that will keep a doctor away, if you eat it every day?
Whatever it is for Gwyneth Paltrow, she chose Apple as a name for her daughter born in 2004.
On an episode of Oprah, the actress once said that her then-partner Chris Martin offered to name their baby girl Apple. “It sounded so sweet,” Gwyneth explained. “And it conjures such a lovely picture for me, you know apples are so sweet and they’re wholesome … and I just thought it sounded so lovely!”
16. MOROCCAN (MARIAH CAREY)
In 2011, Mariah Carey gave birth to fraternal twins, a boy and a girl. She named both of them in a pretty unusual manner. But if we can understand the logic behind her daughter’s name Monroe (it was obviously a tribute to Marylin Monroe), realizing why her son was named Moroccan is a bit tougher.
It turns out, Carey’s then-partner Nick Cannon had a lavish apartment in New York and its top tier was called Moroccan room, because it was designed in the Moroccan style, and it was the room, where he proposed to the singer.
In other words, the boy was named… after a “very special” room.
15. SAGE MOONBLOOD & SEARGEOH (SYLVESTER STALLONE)
The four beautiful ladies you see with Sylvester Stallone in the photo above are his partner and three daughters, who have pretty, but ordinary names (Sophia, Sistine, and Scarlet). But with one of his ex-partners, the actor had other two kids, who were named in a completely different manner.
Sly and Sasha Czack had two sons – Sage Moonblood, who also became an actor but tragically passed in 2012, and Seargeoh. Having no idea about the motivation behind these names, we can notice that Stallone certainly has some feelings for the names starting with S…
14. NORTH, SAINT, & CHICAGO (KIM KARDASHIAN AND KANYE WEST)
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have a very interesting taste when it comes to choosing names for their kids. The name of their first daughter, born in 2013, is North, which means that her full name is… North West.
Commenting on it, Kris Jenner said, “The way Kim explained it to me was North means ‘highest power’, and she says that North is [Kim and Kanye’s] highest point together.”
Well, sounds sweet. But why did they name their son Saint West and another daughter of theirs – Chicago West? This is a good question.
13. INDIO FALCONER (ROBERT DOWNEY JR.)
In 1993, way before Robert Downey Jr. became Iron Man, he and his then-partner Deborah Falconer welcomed a son and named him Indio.
Downey Jr. never explained the motivation behind choosing this name, so all we can say is that Indio is a city in California that hosts the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, as well as some other festivals.
But we can say for sure that the talent runs in the family because Indio is also an aspiring actor and musician these days. We’ll see if he gets to become as famous as his dad.
12. RIVER ROCKET, POPPY HONEY, BUDDY BEAR, DAISY BOO & PETAL BLOSSOM RAINBOW (JAMIE OLIVER)
If you think that you’ve just read some weird set of words in the title of this entry, you’re not entirely right. It’s actually the list of names of Jamie Oliver‘s 5 children.
If anything, we should actually take our hats off for the incredible creativity of the famous chef. I mean, he didn’t only come up with cute and unique names for his kids, but he also did it every time he and his significant other Jools welcomed a new child! Jamie kept the flower-based theme for all three daughters of theirs (Daisy, Poppy, and Petal), but with boy names, he resorted to alliteration (Buddy Bear and River Rocket).
11. BLUEBELL MADONNA (GERI HALLIWELL)
If you’re a ’90s kid, it’s certain that either you were a fan of Spice Girls, or at least you heard a few of their songs. But now, we don’t hear a lot from the former members of the iconic band. Most of them took on another role and became moms.
Geri Halliwell, aka Ginger Spice, is no exception. She has a daughter called Bluebell Madonna. “What really clinched it for me was my mother telling me that the bluebell is increasingly rare, so it’s a precious flower, which seemed just right for my daughter,” Gerri explained her choice. And she added that the middle name is a reference to both the biblical Mary and the singer.
10. EVER IMRE & ONYX SOLACE (ALANIS MORISSETTE)
Alanis Morissette has two children and both of their names are quite unusual. They are Ever Imre (son, born in 2010) and Onyx Solace (daughter, born in 2016). At first sight, these names might sound a bit funny, but if you learn the deep meaning behind them, you’ll probably love them and regret that you didn’t think of them before Morissette.
So her son’s name, Ever Imre, suggests “the eternity of his parents’ love for him”, while her daughter’s name, Onyx Solace, means “bringing comfort in sorrow.” Now, this is what I call a thought-out approach to naming kids!
9. TU (ROB MORROW)
Now let’s take a look at a pun name. We can’t tell that it’s the funniest one, but still…
The star of Northern Exposure Rob Morrow chose no other name for his baby daughter than Tu. Yes, it’s just Tu. Why? Because when pronounced along with her surname, it’s Tu Morrow. The actor obviously thought that the pun was hilarious, but we have no idea if his daughter, who is now 18 years old and also an actress, likes it as much.
8. SPARROW JAMES MIDNIGHT (NICOLE RICHIE AND JOEL MADDEN)
Nicole Richie named her first daughter Harlow Winter Kate and we thought that it was a unique name. But when she named her son Sparrow James Midnight, we realized that it wasn’t that unusual, after all.
When People magazine asked Richie and her partner Joel Madden about their name choice, Nicole answered, “We have different tastes in names. Sparrow was one we both liked.” And Joel added, “I wanted to give him a name that he’s going to have to stand up for. I love it; I think it’s a beautiful name.”
7. SHILOH NOUVEL (BRAD PITT AND ANGELINA JOLIE)
Angelina Jolie has six kids. Three of them are adopted and the other three were given birth by the actress herself. Being an extraordinary person, Jolie always chooses unique names for her children. For example, her first adopted son’s name is Maddox and her adopted daughter’s name is Zahara.
But the most unusual name of all Angelina’s kids is probably Shiloh Nouvel, the first daughter Jolie gave birth to. She was born in 2006 in Namibia, when Jolie and Brad Pitt were still happy together. Ah, the good times…
6. MOXIE CRIMEFIGHTER & ZOLTEN (PENN JILLETTE)
Penn Jillette, a famous illusionist and TV personality, also has a penchant for unusual names. He has two kids named Moxie Crimefighter and Zolten. Hearing these names for the first time, some people think that Jillette is raising a family of superheroes…
However, the illusionist had another motivation, at least with the middle name of his elder daughter. He once shared in an interview, “We chose her middle name because when she’s pulled over for speeding she can say, “But officer, we’re on the same side, my middle name is CrimeFighter.”
We can’t be sure that it’ll help her talk her way out of a ticket, but it’s kinda witty anyway.
5. DENIM & DIESEL (TONI BRAXTON)
In 2001 Toni Braxton gave birth to her son named Denim and her second son, Diesel, was born in 2003. Explaining her choice of the names, the singer said that she thinks “names can define you.” “I think it’s important for kids to have their own identity,” she added in an interview with OK! Magazine.
Toni also said that initially they wanted to spell their first son’s name Denham, but then decided to settle on Denim. And their second baby boy was named after Rudolph Diesel, who invented the diesel engine.
4. BLUE IVY (JAY Z AND BEYONCE)
Blue Ivy is the name of the first daughter Beyonce and Jay Z welcomed into their family in 2012. Back then, the couple made headlines due to choosing such an unusual name. Let’s try to figure out what it means.
Blue seems to be the favorite color of both singers (for example, one of Jay-Z’s songs has a line “My favorite hue is Jay-Z blue”). And what about Ivy? Most certainly, it has something to do with the number 4, which is IV in Roman numerals. A lot of dates important for the couple have this number – Beyonce’s birthday is September 4, Jay-Z’s is December 4, and their anniversary is April 4. Hence the name!
3. JERMAJESTY (JERMAINE JACKSON)
Jermaine Jackson, the brother of Michael Jackson, has a lot of children. Some of them have quite ordinary names (like, Jeremy and Jaimy, for example), while others can blow your mind completely. For example, have you thought of naming your child Autumn? Or Dawn?
But the most extraordinary name of all in Jackson’s family is, certainly, Jermajesty. Although we don’t know whether the phrase “Your majesty” was on Jackson’s mind when he was coming up with it, this name does sound kinda kingly. In a way.
2. TALLULAH BELLE, RUMER & SCOUT LA RUE (DEMI MOORE AND BRUCE WILLIS)
Bruce Willis and Demi Moore began coming up with unusual names for their kids long before many other celebrities in this list did. Their first daughter was born in 1988 and she got the name Rumer (does it have anything to do with some rumors about the couple?). Their second daughter, born in 1991, was called Scout, while their third baby girl received the name Tallulah back in 1994.
It’s even hard to choose which one of these unorthodox names is the most unusual…
1. NAKOA-WOLF MANAKAUAPO NAMAKAEHA (JASON MOMOA AND LISA BONET)
And the award for “the-longest-ever-name-for-a-boy” goes to… Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet! But since it’s a Hawaiian name (Jason was born in Hawaii) and Hawaiian names are commonly longer than those we’re used to, there’s nothing to be surprised about.
Shorty after the baby boy’s birth, the meaning behind his name was revealed. It turns out that Nakoa means ‘Warrior’, Mana stands for ‘Strength or Spirit’, Kaua is ‘Rain’, and Po is translated as ‘Dark’. This name was inspired by the extraordinarily stormy and rainy night when the boy was born. And his second middle name is Namakaeha, which is also Jason’s middle name.
Makes sense now, doesn’t it?
